Henig-Backenrot

Remembering Those Who Passed Away in 2019 – 2020 during the annual memorial meeting held via
Zoom on December 24 th , 2020.

Chava Sarah Rivka Henig, z”l was the daughter of Moshe Friedman and Sima Backenrot.
She was born on 11 Adar Alef, 5687 (February 13 th , 1927) in Uzhhorod (also known as Ungvár) in
Czechoslovakia. She passed away on 22 Sivan, 5779 (June 25 th , 2019) in Israel.
When she was a young girl, her family moved to live in Schodnica, her mother's family (Backenrot)
hometown.
Sara Rivka was the youngest of the family. She was pampered by her two brothers and the rest of the
family and had a happy childhood.
After the Ukrainian pogrom in Schodnica, the family fled and found refuge in Uzhhorod (Ungvár), which
was at the time under Hungarian rule.
On 24 Sivan, 5704 (June 15 th , 1944) the Friedman family was deported to Auschwitz. Sarah Rivka, her
mother and her sister survived the selection and after about two weeks they were sent to the Stutthof
concentration camp in northern Poland.
Towards the end of the war, the three were sent on a death march. Her mother died during the march
and her sister at the end of the march.
At the end of the war, after a period of recovery, she made three decisions:
1. She wants to live, dance and be happy;
2. Her future is only in the Land of Israel;
3. She erases the four years she suffered, and in all her documents, she was listed as four years
younger.
She joined the “gar’in” of Bnei Akiva in Bratislava and there the counselor/leader decided that Ayuchka
(as she was known by all) should be Chava. Since then, her name has been Chava in all her documents.
During the training trip to Belgium, she met who would become her husband, Dov. They tried to
immigrate to Israel on the illegal ship "Theodore Herzl" but the British seized the ship and they were
deported to Cyprus.
Chava immigrated to Israel with the youth aliyah in 1948 and Dov was able to join her a year later.
Shortly after his arrival they were married. They made their home in Tel Aviv, where their three children
were born.
Twelve years after the passing of her husband, Chava passed away at the age of 92, surrounded by her
children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
